How To: Pray the Our Lady Undoer of Knots Rosary Novena

Made popular by Pope Francis who became familiar with this devotion to Our Lady during his studies in Germany, Our Lady the Undoer of Knots theologically dates back years before the image of Our Lady the Undoer of Knots was painted.
Saint Irenaeus wrote that, “The knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied by the obedience of Mary; what the virgin Eve bound by her unbelief, the Virgin Mary loosened by her faith.”

THE HISTORY:

A German nobleman, Wolfgang Langenmantel desired to save his marriage from divorce by seeking counsel from a Jesuit priest Fr. Jakob Rem who was known for his devotion to Our Lady. Wolfgang and his wife Sohpia met Fr. Rem four times in twenty-eight days. September 28, 1615, the couple’s final visit, they brought their wedding ribbon which during 17th century wedding ceremony involved customary practice where the maid of honor tied together the arms of the bride & groom with a white ribbon to symbolized their union for life.

Fr. Rem took their wedding ribbon and untied knots one by one before the image of Our Lady of Snows. Tradition states upon completion of undoing the knots, the ribbon became dazzling white- a sign of Our Lady answering their petition. The Langenmatels remained married and never divorced.

The Lanegenmentel’s Wolfgang’s grandson Fr. Heironymus Ambrosius Langenmantel, in 1700 hundred over 85 years later, commissioned Johann Melchoir Georg Schmittdner to paint a representative of the Langenmantel family for their family altar. Georg Schmittdner, inspired by the story of Wolfgang and Sophia, depicted the narrative. Thus the original Baroque painting of ‘Mary Untier of Knots’ soon became venerated as Mary Undoer of Knots.

THE NOVENA:

Our Lady Undoer of Knots Novena – Day 1

Dearest Holy Mother, Most Holy Mary, you undo the knots that suffocate your children, extend your merciful hands to me. I entrust to You today this knot. . . [Mention your request here] and all the negative consequences that it provokes in my life. I give you this knot that torments me and makes me unhappy and so impedes me from uniting myself to You and Your Son Jesus, my Savior.
I run to You, Mary, Undoer of Knots because I trust you and I know that you never despise a sinning child who comes to ask you for help. I believe that you can undo this knot because Jesus grants you everything. I believe that you want to undo this knot because you are my Mother. I believe that You will do this because you love me with eternal love.

Thank you, Dear Mother.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

The one who seeks grace, finds it in Mary’s hands.

Prayer to Our Lady Undoer of Knots:

Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exist in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exists in my life. You know very well how desperate I am, my pain, and how I am bound by these knots. Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of his children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life. No one, not even the evil one himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone. Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot. . . [Mention your request here] I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all. You are my hope. O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution, and, with Christ, the freedom from my chains. Hear my plea. Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge! Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. Amen.

Our Lady Undoer of Knots Novena – Day 2

Mary, Beloved Mother, channel of all grace, I return to You today my heart, recognizing that I am a sinner in need of your help. Many times I lose the graces you grant me because of my sins of egoism, pride, rancor and my lack of generosity and humility. I turn to You today, Mary, Undoer of knots, for You to ask your Son Jesus to grant me a pure, divested, humble and trusting heart. I will live today practicing these virtues and offering you this as a sign of my love for You. I entrust into Your hands this knot. . . [Mention your request here] which keeps me from reflecting the glory of God.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Mary offered all the moments of her day to God.

Prayer to Our Lady Undoer of Knots:

Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge! Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. Amen.

Our Lady Undoer of Knots Novena – Day 3

Meditating Mother, Queen of heaven, in whose hands the treasures of the King are found, turn your merciful eyes upon me today. I entrust into your holy hands this knot in my life… [list names] and all the rancor and resentment it has caused in me. I ask Your forgiveness, God the Father, for my sin. Help me now to forgive all the persons who consciously or unconsciously provoked this knot. Give me, also, the grace to forgive me for having provoked this knot. Only in this way can You undo it. Before You, dearest Mother, and in the name of Your Son Jesus, my Savior, who has suffered so many offenses, having been granted forgiveness, I now forgive these persons… [list names] and myself, forever. Thank you, Mary, Undoer of Knots for undoing the knot of rancor in my heart and the knot which I now present to you. Amen.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Turn to Mary, you who desire grace.

Our Lady Undoer of Knots Novena – Day 4

Dearest Holy Mother, you are generous with all who seek you, have mercy on me. I entrust into your hands this knot which robs the peace of my heart, paralyzes my soul and keeps me from going to my Lord and serving Him with my life.
Undo this knot in my love…., O mother, and ask Jesus to heal my paralytic faith which gets downhearted with the stones on the road. Along with you, dearest Mother, may I see these stones as friends. Not murmuring against them anymore but giving endless thanks for them, may I smile trustingly in your power.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Mary is the Sun and no one is deprived of her warmth.

Mother, Undoer of Knots, generous and compassionate, I come to You today to once again entrust this knot…in my life to you and to ask the divine wisdom to undo, under the light of the Holy Spirit, this snarl of problems. No one ever saw you angry; to the contrary, your words were so charged with sweetness that the Holy Spirit was manifested on your lips. Take away from me the bitterness, anger and hatred which this knot has caused me. Give me, o dearest Mother, some of the sweetness and wisdom that is all silently reflected in your heart. And just as you were present at Pentecost, ask Jesus to send me a new presence of the Holy Spirit at this moment in my life. Holy Spirit, come upon me!

Make me joyfully rest on your bosom, Mary. I consecrate you as my mother, Queen and friend. I give you my heart and everything I have (my home and family, my material and spiritual goods.) How To: Pray the Rosary

rosaryOctober is a Marian Month and the Month of the Rosary. I’m slowly reading and digesting Fr. Calloway’s Champions of the Rosary which I highly recommend as a historical and spiritual overview of the important and heavenly inspired devotion known the rosary. October is the Month of the Rosary. October 7th marks the celebration of the Marian Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The rosary is shrouded in mystery and misconceptions for many people in our modern era (and historically too!) This meditative devotion is pure love and truth of the Gospel and the Life of Christ through the loving arms, insightful eyes, childlike trust, and merciful compassion of Our Lady, the Mother of Our Lord.

The biblical basis for the “Hail Mary” stems from the Gospels- The Annunciation and Visitation. The building blocks of the rosary have existed for centuries beginning as a simple meditation that developed into the Marian Psalter and eventually the rosary as we know today.  This is a devotion that connects centuries of saints and sinners. Simple yet profound- a spiritual weapon for our times. Please, join me during the Month of October praying the Rosary as Chronically Catholic Blog’s Monthly Devotion.

“The rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the rosary is beyond description.” – Archbishop Fulton Sheen

How To Pray the Rosary:

***There are a variety of approved variations of the Rosary that allow the faithful to meditate on the Life of Christ and Life of Mary in various manners. For example, there is the Carthusian Rosary, The Franciscan Crown Rosary, etc. I have chosen the most common version of the rosary to explain.***

beads-cross-prayer-236336

INTRODUCTORY PRAYERS:

  1. While holding the crucifix, make the Sign of the Cross & pray the Apostles’ Creed.
  2. On the first large bead, pray the Our Father (can be prayed for the intentions of the Holy Father.)
  3. On the subsequent three small beads, pray the Hail Mary (can be prayed for an increase in Faith, Hope, & Charity.)
  4. On the final bead, pray the Glory Be.
  5. [Some people pray the Fatima Prayer after the Glory Bead here.]

THE DECADES:

  1. Announce the 1st Mystery for the Corresponding Day [either Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, or Luminous.] [after announcing the mystery, you can add a reflection or biblical passage, intention, etc.]
  2. On the next large bead, pray the Our Father.
  3. On each small bead, pray the Hail Mary [there are 10 total per mystery.]
  4. In the space between the final Hail Mary and the Our Father bead, pray the Glory Be and the Fatima Prayer [a prayer Mary revealed to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917.]
  5. Repeat steps 1-4, for the next four mysteries of the rosary [2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th mystery.]

CLOSING PRAYERS:

  1. After the final Glory Be, pray the Hail Holy Queen on the center section, medal, or bead that joins the 3 strands of the Rosary together. You can conclude with the Rosary Prayer.
  2. While holding the cross or crucifix, conclude with the Sign of the Cross.

OPTIONAL:

  1. There are variations to the ending of the rosary after the Hail Holy Queen is prayed, Many people conclude with the Rosary Prayer. Others pray other important devotional payers such as the Memorare or St. Michael the Archangel Prayer etc.
  2. As a Catholic, we are asked to pray for the Holy Father and his Intentions. There are special graces attributed too. My family concludes the Rosary with praying for the Holy Father and his intentions followed by the Our Father, Hail Mary, & Glory Be. This is a traditional approach to praying for the Holy Father and his intentions.
  3. You can also conclude the rosary with intercessions. For example: Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us. Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. Holy Family, pray for us. etc.
  4. I do recommend starting [or ending if you forget] specific intentions that you offer your rosary up for [and you should pray for yourself too!]

THE PRAYERS OF THE ROSARY:

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. * I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. * Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses; as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women; and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. * Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, * as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Fatima Prayer

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.

Hail, Holy Queen

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and, after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us O holy mother of God, * that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Rosary Prayer

Let us pray. * O God, whose only-begotten Son by his life, death and Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech thee, that by meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Doloures, or Mother of Sorrows is a Catholic devotion founded on the Prophesy of Simeon that 7 Swords would pierce Our Lady’s heart: “and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce)* so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Luke 2:34-35

HOW TO PRAY THE NOVENA TO OUR LADY OF SORROWS:

Pray From: September 7-15th.

Our Lady of Sorrows Novena Prayers

Our Lady of Sorrows Novena – Day 1

O BLESSED Virgin Mary, Mother of our Redeemer! remember we are thy children, given to thee by thy Divine Son, when expiring on the cross. Mother of sorrows! by the tears which flowed from thy eyes when Saint John related how the traitor Judas sold thy Divine Son for the vile price of thirty pieces of silver; how, in the Garden of Olives, he was agonized with fear and sorrow, the blood gushing through every pore; by all the anguish that overwhelmed thy heart when thou didst hear that Jesus, the only object of thy love, was condemned to death; by the sorrow that pierced thy maternal bosom, in meeting thy only beloved Son loaded with a heavy cross, spent through loss of blood, fatigue and pain; by that heroic resignation to the divine will, which, triumphing over the sentiments of nature, sustained thee at the foot of the cross; by the excess of grief that would have robbed thee of life, had not God preserved thee for the comfort of his disciples and of his infant church; by the dolors that rent thy desolate heart when beholding thy beloved Jesus, most beautiful in his comeliness above the sons of men, become a prey to death, the ignominious death of the cross; by all the sufferings of thy most afflicted heart, obtain for us, O Mother of Mercy, true contrition for our sins, persevering fervour in the divine service, and the particular favours we solicit in this Novena.

O thou most tender and afflicted Mother, who didst sacrifice thyself on the same altar with thy beloved Son, and whose heart was penetrated by the nails that fastened him to the cross; as it was our sins inflicted those torments on thy Divine Son, we acknowledge that we justly deserve the wrath of divine justice to fall on our devoted heads. But if those very sufferings have proved our defense and protection heretofore, grant that now at least we may participate profoundly in the sorrow of which we have been the unhappy cause; and obtain, that souls hitherto so insensible to the strongest proofs of love, may, by heartfelt contrition, taste one drop of that bitter chalice of which thou didst drink so deeply.

Amen.

Our Lady of Sorrows Novena – Day 2

Amen.
